My Teaching

Art in a Box Project, Kenmore Middle School

In my AED 300 class, we created an art in a box project, that was to be explored my middle school students. Each of our boxes contained information on the topic, and three activities. My art in a box was about three animals, the Bengal tiger, the Asian elephant, and the giant Panda. Inside of the box were facts about the animals, visual resources and three activities to choose from. The girls both chose the activity with the model magic. I did not think I would have anything in common with middle school students, but after speaking with them we had a lot of the same interests.

Kindergarten Lesson, Mullen Elementary

My Kindergarten Lesson was based on Jesse Klausmeier's story, Open This Little Book. What the children had to do, was create their own book that followed along with the sequence of the story. An example would be, if the page says open this little red book, then on the back of the red page they would draw an animal or object that is red. The children's books were made out of construction paper, and they were given oil pastels to complete their drawings. The first thing that we did together was read the book, then I showed them my teacher example. The girls were very excited and couldn't wait to start drawing. They were able to draw very quickly and finished the assignment early. I was surprised to see how much they were able to get done in such a short amount of time. We had forty five minutes to prepare, teach and clean up for our lesson. Our lessons were planned out ahead of time, and we had to figure out how much time we would need to prepare, demonstrate, explain the directions and clean up.

Teaching Philosophy

I have not had a lot of teaching experience, but I would like to become an art teacher. I will teach my students how to express themselves and explore their creativity. Everyone has the ability to be creative and will show them that. I will give them all different kinds of projects, using different types of media and show them that there is more to art than just drawing and painting. I will help them explore their talents and get them to try new things. I will try to create projects that are interesting and that relate to their lives.
